Secretary of State Debra Bowen yesterday certified the eighth initiative for the November 4, 2008, General Election ballot. The measure would amend California’s Constitution to define marriage as a union “between a man and a woman.”
“The response from the people of this state has been unprecedented in support of marriage’s legacy, by responding with an all-out volunteer signature campaign,” said Ron Prentice, CEO of the California Family Council and Chairman of the ProtectMarriage.com coalition sponsoring the amendment. “We’re so grateful to the over 1.1 million voters who signed the marriage petition in time for the November election. Passing this amendment is the only way for the people to override the four supreme court judges who want to re-define marriage for our entire society.”

If this becomes part of the constitution, what will happen to the marriages that "slipped through"? In the time between the court ruling and the ammendment? Will there be a handful of people recognized as married?
ReplyDeleteGood question. To avoid chaos, the Alliance Defense Fund and ten other state Attorney Generals have requested a "stay" on this decision that would prevent any gay marriages until after the November election.
ReplyDeleteI just saw on FOX that the court refused to stay its decision. They seem to be mor epolitcally driven than constitionally (sp).
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I'm not sure what will happen now. My guess is that marriage licenses would be nullified if the amendment passes in November, similar to what happened in 2004 when San Francisco started issuing same sex marriage licenses. I wonder if the US Supreme Court would have to intervene.
ReplyDeleteWorld Magazine reported in their May 31 issue: "Even if Californians elect to restore the traditional definition this fall, all same-sex marriages completed within that five-month window would stand." So, I guess they will have to be legally recognized.
